Late 1990s: The Birth of Search Engines

The first glimmer of the organization came with the search engine that was capable of indexing FTP archives- Archies. But it came with its own disadvantages, and the real breakthrough was marked by directories like Yahoo, which categorized websites for easier navigation. 

Another search engine, AltaVista, was doing rounds on the internet around that time. It utilized web crawling technology to index pages, but it soon became prominent that a much more sophisticated technology would be required in the coming years.
